The talk will open with an introduction to the basic concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it impacts language preservation including the historical and cultural contexts. We will discuss the unique complexity of the Ladino language, its history, and its current status as an endangered language requiring significant preservation efforts. We will review examples of existing research and projects that utilize artificial intelligence technologies for learning, documenting, and making accessible languages at risk of extinction, and examine the potential of similar uses for Ladino. The talk will then move on to discuss the technological and cultural challenges related to language preservation through AI, including issues such as data collection, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to preserve unique linguistic structures and complexities.
