About Sephardi Spaces

The Sephardi Spaces Project documents Sephardic Jewish history, migration, and identity from the 1492 Expulsion to the present. Combining an interactive migration map, an archive of testimonials, and a growing biographical database, it traces how language, memory, and displacement shaped Sephardic communities across five centuries. The project is directed by Dr. Shai Cohen at the University of Miami.

The project’s methodology draws on autobiographical testimonials and interactive GIS mapping to trace Sephardic migration and identity formation, from the expulsion generation to figures like Uriel da Costa, whose life embodies the era’s crossings of faith and geography.

The result is a living archive, a resource for the public, scholars, and educators alike, and a bridge connecting the displacements of the past to the communities carrying that heritage forward today.
