Instructions for Creating a Map
Method 1 (Recommended)
- Become a member (it’s free!)
- If not, you can still add your character (just not edit or add information later)
- Add character at Add a Character.
- Follow instructions
- You are Done!
Method 2 (Manual)
- Open the spreadsheet template
- Download:
- Click File → Make a copy (recommended) or File → Download
- Open the file in an editor (like Google Sheets)
- Edit the Chapters tab
- For each place the person/family lived or passed through, fill these columns:
- Chapter
- Write a clear label like:
“Birthplace – City”,
“Education – City”,
“Career – City”,
“Migration – City”,
“Later Life – City”
- Write a clear label like:
- Description
- Start with 1–5 sentences explaining why this place matters
- Explain what your character(s) did there
- If possible, add bullet points with key facts
- Location
- Format: City, Country
- Longitude / Latitude
- Paste decimal coordinates (use Google Maps if needed)
- Chapter
- OPTIONAL: Add photo/video links under the
Media Links tab - Upload to Google Scripts:
- Download spreadsheet as an
.xlsx file - Upload to this link
- Wait a few minutes
- Click View Map
- Email: shaicohen@miami.edu the .xlsx file.
- Download spreadsheet as an
- You Are Done!
